Cellulite is a skin condition that troubles 80-90% of post-pubertal women, according to research studies. Skin with cellulite appears as orange peel skin and lacks youthfulness. What actually causes cellulite and how can we smooth it out?
What is Cellulite
Cellulite, also known as orange peel skin, cottage-cheese skin or hail damage, is a skin condition where the arrangement of fat cells chambers is changed and fat cells push against the skin, causing the formation of lumpy and dimpled skin surface. It is much more common in women than in men.
During a woman’s puberty, the change of female hormonal level will change their skin’s subcutaneous structure. Fat cells tend to deposit in the waist, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs, resulting in excessive accumulation of fat at those body parts. The deposited fat cells cause the push against each other and slow down the surrounding blood flow, leading to the water and waste retaining in the fat layer. This results in a lumpy and dimpling skin surface, which is called cellulite or orange peel skin as the skin will look like the peel of an orange.
Causes
Our thighs and buttocks contain more fat cells than other parts of the body, making them easier for developing cellulite. Other factors that cause cellulite in our body include:
- Age
- Hormonal Level
- Family History
- Weight Gain
- Loss of Collagen
- Thinner Epidermis
- Sedentary Lifestyle
Symptoms
Cellulite often appears lumpy, uneven, and dimpled flesh like a peel of an orange on the thighs and buttocks.
○ Self-test for cellulite: Pinching the skin around your thighs, buttocks, or any body part that has significant fat deposits. If the pinched skin looks a bit lumpy, you probably have cellulite.
Affected people
Cellulite is not about the number of fat cells in the body, people with all kinds of body shape can have it. Also, it is related to female hormones, it is more common in females than males.
Treatment
A. Shaper RF Body Contouring
What is Shaper:
Shaper is also known as the body RF “Yoga”. It is equipped with a 6 ring-shaped concentric electrode technology that applies multisource phrase-controlled 3DEEP RF technology to deliver heat energy in 3D, reaching deep dermis and subcutaneous fat layers. The heat energy stimulates the production of collagens and triggers the contraction of collagen and elastin fibres deep in 11 mm, which can tighten skin at stubborn areas such as abdomen, flank, thigh, etc. Treating cellulite skin with Shaper can effectively and quickly smooth the skin surface, moisturise skin, and restore a youthful skin texture.
How does it work:
With the 3DEEP™ patented technology, the Shaper applicator delivers energy gradually from epidermis, dermis, to fat layer. The thermal effect stimulates existing collagens, encourages the production of new collagen in the dermis, increases the activity of lipase to remove fat cells, dilates blood vessels, increases blood flow, and promotes lymphatic circulation. As a result, Shaper provides immediate and visible results in improving cellulite, remodelling skin texture, and restoring skin surface.
Procedure:
- Face-to-face consultation with a professional practitioner: Develop a unique body contouring treatment plan based on the client’s condition and desired results.
- Pre-treatment: The skin is marked to identify the treatment areas. Clean and disinfect the treatment areas. Then apply gel on the treatment areas.
- Temperature test: Perform trials to confirm the temperature. When the treated area has reached the targeted temperature, the treatment can begin.
- During treatment: Operate the treatment at the treatment areas.
- Post-treatment precautions.
Duration: 30-45 mins
Who is it for:
- People who want to get non-invasive treatment to improve their cellulite, skin laxity and fat deposition;

B. Thermage
What is Thermage:
Thermage uses radiofrequency (RF) technology to deliver heat to the dermis. The heat energy will damage the dermal fibres at the localised area and hence stimulate the cellular natural healing process. The healing process promotes the formation and remodelling of collagens, which will tighten, smoothen, and lift the skin, resulting in re-contouring and slowing down the ageing process. Thermage FLX is the latest generation of the popular Thermage tightening and wrinkle reduction system, offering a non-invasive therapy for a younger-looking appearance. Suitable for face (includes area around eyes) and body skin tightening.
How does it work:
Thermage is a radiofrequency treatment. The patented applicator will be placed on your skin and deliver the accurately set radiofrequency to the dermis and heat the layer to 65 – 75℃. The high temperature will stimulate the self-healing mechanism. A large number of collagens in the dermis will be regenerated, resulting in an instant firming effect. Thermage is also equipped with a cooling system that will maintain the temperature of the epidermis at 35 – 45 ℃ to avoid the risk of burning. Thermage can effectively tackle skin problems such as skin laxity after childbirth/weight loss, stretch marks, cellulite, etc.
Procedure:
1. Face-to-face consultation: Customise a Thermage treatment plan based on client’s conditions and desired results.
2. Pre-treatment preparation: Clean and disinfect the treatment areas. Mark on the skin to identify treatment areas. Confirm the package of the new tip of the applicator has not been opened.
3. During treatment: Proceed with the customised plan to perform Thermage to tighten the skin and remove wrinkles.
4. Post-treatment precautions.
Duration: 45-60 mins

C. Lipodissolve Injection
What is lipodissolve injection:
Lipodissolve injection is considered as the most safe and effective non-surgical fat reduction treatment, it works particularly well on local fat reduction and removal of stubborn fat such as double chin, chubby face, arm, and leg. Lipodissolve injection boosts the metabolic rate of fat tissue, speeds up the breakdown process of fat cells, and tightens and lifts the skin. It works by reducing the number of fat cells instead of water content.
How does it work:
Lipodissolve injection solution will be injected into the subcutaneous fat layer. The active ingredients in the solution will break down the walls of fat cells and increase the localised concentration of lipase enzymes to facilitate the destruction of fat cells and let the body flush out the fat as waste via the lymphatic system. Lipodissolve injectio has an additional effect on boosting the circulation of blood and lymph, which helps to restore the skin’s elasticity.
Procedure:
- Face-to-face consultation: Customise a treatment plan based on the client’s condition and desired results. Draw marking on the treatment areas to define injection sites.
- Pre-treatment preparation: Local anaesthetic. Clean and disinfect the injection sites.
- Injection: Administered with blunt needles. Only one injection at each injection site.
