Sunken Cheeks/Undefined Facial Profile
Cheek is a critical facial feature that outlines our facial profile; a round, fuller facial profile delivers a younger-looking face. The collagen in our body peaks at the age of 25 and starts to decline. The loss of collagen will lead to the appearance of drooping skin and loss of tissue volume. Losing volume at the cheeks create sunken cheeks that will give the impression of tiredness and old. However, aesthetic treatment can help slow them down or even reverse them.
Sunken Cheeks
Collagen is a protein and one of its essential functions is to give structural support in tissues. However, we gradually lose collagen as we age, resulting in losing volume in tissue, one of the obvious observations is the development of sunken cheeks.
Scientists recently tend to believe that the manifestation of ageing is not drooping skin but skin losing volume/skin depression. During the ageing process, our skin loses its collagen and subcutaneous fat which causes the loss of tissue volume and structural support in the skin. This change will make the skin uneven and depressed. Some common locations that show depression during ageing are forehead, temple, eye lid and cheek.

Causes
Sunken skin is mainly caused by ageing. Ageing stimulates the loss of collagen which will reduce the structural support of tissues, leading to the loss of volume and plumpness of the skin and drooping skin. When sunken skin happens at the cheek, we can see cheek depression and a drooping jawline.
Other possible reasons for sunken cheeks:
- Wide zygomatic arch or high cheekbone can strength the depression appearance at the cheeks;
- Lack of fat tissue at the deep cheek layer. Some people were born with little to no fat tissue at their deep cheek layer. This condition creates unwanted shadow at the cheeks that disturb a balanced facial appearance.

Symptoms
